To ensure a smooth planting experience, Tree-Nation offers a stock replacement system that keeps your automations running even when specific tree species go out of stock or change in price.
This article explains how the species replacement system works, your available settings, and how to stay in control.
Planting with live stock
Many of Tree-Nation’s planting tools let you automate your tree planting — for example, planting five trees every month for your aunt Rosie. When setting up an automation, you can choose both the project and the species you wish to plant.
While we do provide this granularity for transparency reasons, species availability evolves constantly. We manage over a thousand species across seasonal planting programs, and stock levels may vary based on the time of year, planting conditions, or the addition of new planting sites within ongoing reforestation projects.
To ensure your automations continue planting uninterrupted, we’ve developed a Stock Replacement Module.
💡Note: Most advanced automations use multi-species lists by default and are not affected. But if your automation uses only one species or a custom list, replacements may occur.
What happens if a species runs out of stock?
If a selected species becomes unavailable, the Stock Replacement Module automatically finds a replacement that matches your original as closely as possible — always at the exact same price.
The replacement logic follows this order:
-
⏱️It first looks within the same project, for a species with the same or higher CO₂ absorption.⏱️
-
If no match is found, it expands to other projects, again selecting a species with the same or higher CO₂ absorption.
Once the tree is planted:
-
The tree detail view will clearly display which species was planted.
-
⏱️ A note will indicate that this is a replacement species. ⏱️
-
⏱️ A notification will be triggered in your account.⏱️
⏱️What happens if a species price changes?⏱️
If the price of a species changes, your default setting determines what happens:
-
Default behavior: the system sticks to the same price and replaces the species.
-
Optional behavior: you can choose to keep the original species, even if its price goes up or down.
This preference applies to all automations in your account. You can change it anytime from your account Settings.
🔔 If you’ve activated the “stick with original species” setting, you’ll receive a price change notification when a change occurs.
⏱️Early warning for low stock⏱️
(Enterprise feature)
Enterprise users benefit from early warnings when a species is running low. This gives you time to:
-
Edit your automation
-
Adjust species selections
-
Avoid automatic replacements
You can manage these notifications in your account Settings.
⏱️Automation dashboard & editing tools⏱️
Your automation dashboard helps you monitor and control species availability. If an automation was affected by a species replacement, a label will appear:
“Stock Replacement”.
You’ll also see:
-
Short-term stock issue → species unavailable for less than 6 months
-
Long-term stock issue → species unavailable for more than 6 months
From there, you can update your automations and adjust species or project settings as needed.
Staying in control
The stock replacement system ensures that your tree planting continues smoothly, even when species availability changes. ⏱️You'll always be informed when replacements occur, and you can customize how the system behaves in your settings.⏱️
⏱️For full control, check your automation dashboard regularly and adjust your preferences anytime.⏱️
