Tree-Nation and international reporting frameworks
Tree-Nation helps thousands of companies deliver certified tree-planting whose outcomes fit the major international climate, forest, and biodiversity reporting frameworks.
What corporate reporting actually covers
Sustainability reporting has grown well beyond emissions. Companies today report on three connected topics:
- Climate and carbon, through frameworks like the GHG Protocol, CDP Climate Change, and SBTi
- Forests and land use, through frameworks like the GHG Protocol LULUCF Guidance and CDP Forests
- Biodiversity and communities, through frameworks like the CSRD (ESRS E4 for biodiversity, ESRS S3 for affected communities) and VSME for smaller companies
Tree-planting contributes to all three. What differs is what the tree can be reported as: a carbon credit against a company's emissions, or documented environmental and social impact alongside emissions reporting.
What Tree-Nation delivers
Tree-Nation is a reforestation and agroforestry partner. Our four certifications correspond to different kinds of projects and produce outputs suitable for different kinds of reporting.
Foundation and Mission projects generate carbon credits with full documentation, monitoring, and carbon rights transfer. These credits are designed to be used as carbon offsets in climate reporting (GHG Protocol, CDP Climate Change, SBTi Beyond Value Chain Mitigation).
Nature, Forest Gardens, and Legacy projects use the same measurement methodology and produce a documented CO₂ value per tree, but do not issue carbon credits. They deliver real environmental and social outcomes (hectares restored, native species planted, biodiversity, community livelihoods) and are designed for reporting under forest, biodiversity, and community frameworks (CDP Forests, CSRD ESRS E4, ESRS S3, VSME).
Many companies use both kinds of projects, because most reporting frameworks now expect a mix of carbon action and nature and community action.
How we work
We calculate carbon per tree planted rather than per hectare of project area, using our own methodology developed and refined over time. This per-tree approach is consistent across all four certifications.
Across all our projects, we align with the internationally shared principles that reporting frameworks expect:
- Additionality: trees planted through Tree-Nation would not have been planted without our sponsors' funding.
- Permanence: we work with partners to ensure long-term care and survival of the trees.
- Conservative estimates: our per-tree carbon calculation applies prudence factors upfront, so expected survival failures and other uncertainties are accounted for before any claim is made. This replaces the traditional buffer-pool used in the voluntary carbon market.
- No double counting: each tree's CO₂ impact is assigned only once and cannot be resold. Every tree, across every certification, is recorded in our public retirement log at the moment of purchase.
- Monitoring: continuous measurement of tree survival and growth, done with local partners throughout the project's maintenance period.
- Independent verification: our methodologies are reviewed by independent international academic reviewers, and our validation and monitoring data are published for direct inspection by any observer.
- Public governance: our methodologies are public and are updated through transparent versioning.
- Environmental and social safeguards: each project documents biodiversity and community impact as part of the Project Design Document, including local partner engagement in design and execution.
What about the Core Carbon Principles (CCP)?
The Core Carbon Principles are a quality benchmark for carbon credits set by the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM). CDP and other frameworks accept both CCP-approved credits and other reputable certifications, provided sponsors do their due diligence.
Tree-Nation has not sought CCP certification. Our approach is built on public transparency and continuous data-based verification, published openly for anyone to inspect, rather than on the periodic third-party audit model that CCP is built around. We believe transparency-first verification is the right integrity mechanism for our per-tree methodology.
For clients whose reporting specifically requires CCP-certified credits, we also resell CCP-certified credits from Verra and other issuers alongside our own tree-planting. See the full comparison of our carbon products to review all options.
For our clients
Companies working with Tree-Nation can report their contributions across the reporting stack, separately from their own emissions inventory:
- If you report carbon offsets against your emissions (GHG Protocol, CDP Climate Change, SBTi), use Foundation or Mission projects.
- If you report on forests, land use, biodiversity, or community impact (CDP Forests, CSRD ESRS E4, ESRS S3, VSME), Nature, Forest Gardens, and Legacy projects give you documented outcomes alongside a per-tree CO₂ value.
As a core part of our mission we strive to provide clear, traceable, and high-integrity data to support our clients' goals, whether that data enters a climate footprint, a forest disclosure, or a biodiversity report.
