The lifecycle of a Tree-Nation project

Tree-Nation projects follow a structured lifecycle based on verification events, from initial validation to long-term monitoring.

1. Project validation & ex-ante carbon issuance

  • The project is reviewed and approved (PDD validation)

  • Site, planting plan, and species mix are defined

  • Expected CO₂ capture is calculated based on the methodology

At this stage:

  • Carbon is issued ex-ante based on projected sequestration

  • Credits become available for sale immediately

  • Each tree and its expected impact are registered in the system

This is when the project becomes economically active.

2. Planting verification

  • Trees are planted on-site

  • A planting report is submitted including:

    • Number of trees planted

    • Dates and site data

    • Geolocated photos

    • Species mix

  • Tree-Nation verifies the report before monitoring begins

This ensures that planting matches the validated project.

3. Annual monitoring (5–10 years)

  • Projects are monitored every year

  • A monitoring report is submitted including:

    • Survival rates

    • Tree growth (height, health)

    • Updated geolocated photos

    • Socioeconomic impact data

Monitoring duration depends on certification:

  • Mission: ~5 years

  • Foundation: ~10 years

4. Remote sensing verification (annual)

  • Conducted alongside monitoring each year

  • Satellite data is used to verify vegetation development:

    • Mission: EVI (independent vegetation proxy)

    • Foundation: Confirmed carbon (AGC datasets)

This provides an independent validation layer across all projects.

5. Carbon tracking & confirmation

  • All projects are tracked through a carbon ledger

  • Ex-ante carbon is progressively validated over time

For most projects:

  • Carbon remains ex-ante with ongoing verification

For Foundation projects only:

  • Carbon can be confirmed ex-post with higher precision

  • Additional verified carbon may be issued
