MITECO Carbon Footprint Registry (Spain)
Understanding the MITECO Carbon Footprint Registry (Spain) and Tree-Nation's Role
Overview
The Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica y el Reto Demográfico, or MITECO) maintains a voluntary registry known as the Registro de huella de carbono, compensación y proyectos de absorción de CO₂ (Carbon Footprint, Compensation and CO₂ Absorption Projects Registry).
This registry allows Spanish companies and organizations to:
-
Calculate and register their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions
-
Record their reduction efforts
-
Offset their emissions through approved reforestation and absorption projects located within Spain
Tree-Nation & MITECO
Tree-Nation offers global reforestation projects and carbon offsetting through various certified standards including Mission (Tree-Nation Standard), VCS (Verified Carbon Standard), and Plan Vivo. These offsets:
-
Provide traceability, transparency, and impact reporting
-
Support reforestation and conservation worldwide
However, these offsets are not eligible for official compensation recognition within MITECO's registry, as:
-
MITECO only accepts offsetting through national projects located in Spain
-
These projects must be approved by MITECO and listed in their registry
✅ That said...
You can still register your carbon footprint (calculation only) in the MITECO registry and:
-
Show your efforts to reduce emissions
-
Publicly communicate that you’re offsetting through certified international projects (e.g., via Tree-Nation)
-
Mention these actions in your CSR, ESG, ISO or CSRD reports
🚫 Just note: This won’t count as “compensated” in the official offset section of the MITECO registry, and your company will not receive the green “compensated” band in their Huella de Carbono seal.
✅ Alternative approach
If your company wants both:
-
International offsetting (e.g. Tree-Nation, VCS) for cost-efficiency or wider global impact
-
And local recognition in Spain (i.e. appearing as “compensated” in MITECO’s registry)
Then you can:
-
Use Tree-Nation international offsets for global communication, ESG, CSRD, or ISO reporting
-
Complement them with an offset in an eligible Spanish project (even if partial), which allows your company to receive the green “compensated” band and appear officially in MITECO’s registry.
🟢 Note: While MITECO currently grants the “compensated” status regardless of the offset volume (as long as it’s from an approved Spanish project), we recommend aligning the offset quantity with your actual emissions—or clearly communicating the proportion covered—to avoid reputational risk or greenwashing concerns.
Company size considerations
-
Large companies: Likely to be subject to the EU CSRD reporting, which may include emissions and offsetting disclosures
-
SMEs: Not mandatory, but encouraged to report voluntarily, especially if part of value chains that require environmental commitments
Future developments
Tree-Nation plans to include MITECO-compliant projects in the near future. If your company is interested in offsetting emissions through officially recognized Spanish projects, please contact us at support@tree-nation.com.
