Our approach to species selection

Species selection is defined by the project at the validation stage, before planting begins. Tree-Nation reviews and validates the proposed approach.

We do not apply global rules or standardized KPIs.

Each project is designed by optimizing for local ecological conditions.

1. Local conditions define everything

Species are selected by the project based on:

  • Climate

  • Soil

  • Water availability

  • Local ecosystem dynamics

  • Local socioeconomic context

There is no predefined global species list or performance target. Whenever possible, projects are designed to align ecological outcomes with local socioeconomic incentives, helping ensure long-term viability and community engagement.

2. Native, adapted, and justified choices

Priority is given to:

  • Native species, or

  • Species proven to perform well locally

Non-native (exotic) species can be accepted if:

  • Their use is clearly justified by the project, and

  • Their ecological impact is considered and explained

This ensures flexibility while maintaining ecological integrity.

3. Management of invasive risk

Species are reviewed against recognized environmental databases and sources.

Species with invasive potential may be accepted if:

  • The project provides a clear justification for their use, and

  • Appropriate mitigation measures are defined to control their spread

This approach places responsibility on the project to demonstrate safe and controlled use within its specific context.

4. Designed per project, not per system

Each project defines its own:

  • Species mix

  • Planting strategy

Tree-Nation validates the approach rather than imposing a universal model, as each ecosystem requires a tailored approach to function effectively in its natural conditions.

5. Flexibility across project types

Species selection varies depending on the project type, including:

  • Agroforestry and hedgerows

  • Riparian restoration

  • Mangroves

  • Forest gardens

Each requires a different ecological approach.

6. Defined at validation, verified at planting

The species mix is agreed during project validation

It is then:

  • Reported during planting

  • Verified through planting reports and geolocated data

Any deviation must be documented and reviewed.
