When planting trees through Tree-Nation, your species selection method depends on how you use our platform — either through automated integrations or manual planting. This article explains the differences and helps you choose the right approach for your needs.

When you automate your tree planting, you select a Species Package, specially curated by our forestry team. These packages are optimized for:

• 🌳 Reliable project stock

Why packages work best for automation
Species Packages are designed to keep your planting consistent, scalable, and low-maintenance — no need to worry about changing project availability or fluctuating prices.

🌐 Available Species Packages

Each package represents a different price point and planting focus. Here's a quick overview:

💡 Note: If you are using Offset Website or Offset Team, your plan already includes a predefined package. This may vary over time to ensure optimal diversity and stock.

🔵 Standard Packages (Recommended)

Standard packages are actively curated and maintained by Tree-Nation's environmental team. This means species and projects are regularly reviewed, updated, and replaced when needed — your planting stays consistent, scalable, and hassle-free.

⚠️ Custom Mix Package — Important Considerations

The Custom Mix is only recommended if your planting action has a specific requirement for certain species or regions. Before selecting it, please be aware of the following:

What Tree-Nation does not do with Custom Mix:

• We do not actively monitor your custom configuration for species availability or project changes.
• We do not automatically replace species with newly added ones if a project closes or a species goes out of stock.

What this means in practice:

• If a species in your custom package runs out of stock or its project closes, it will not be automatically replaced with a new species unless you contact us and request an update.
• If all species in your custom package run out of stock or no longer meet the agreed price per tree, the general species replacement system activates. This may result in trees from other regions or projects being planted to ensure continuity.

In short: Standard packages are managed for you. Custom Mix requires you to stay on top of your configuration. If specific species or regions are not a hard requirement for your planting, a standard package will always be the more reliable choice.

🛠️ Manual Planting (custom selection)

Used for:

• One-time tree purchases via Plant

• Monthly recurrent planting

• Tonnes offsetting

🎁 Can I let my Tree-Gift recipient choose the tree species or project?

At the moment, tree recipients cannot choose the species or project themselves when receiving a Tree-Gift. This is for two important reasons:

1. Tree prices vary by project and species.
   Allowing recipients to choose could result in a mismatch between the sponsor’s budget and the cost of the selected tree. To maintain pricing integrity, only the person funding the trees (the sponsor) can select the project and species.

2. Gifting requires advance planting setup.
   Tree-Gifts are pre-linked to a specific tree and project, which is chosen during the planting process. This ensures the gift is ready to be claimed immediately — no waiting, no manual setup.

🛠️ Alternative: Let your recipient help decide before planting

If you're using the manual planting method, and want your recipient to help choose, here's how:

1. Share the Tree-Nation Project List with your recipient.

2. Ask them to pick their preferred project or even a specific species within a project.

3. You can then manually plant a tree matching their choice and gift it using the Offer Trees feature.

This approach lets you respect their preferences while maintaining full control over the budget and planting action.
