What is a Tree-Gift?

A Tree-Gift is a tree that you plant on behalf of someone else — to celebrate, thank, engage, or simply raise awareness. You can gift a tree to anyone: a friend, a customer, a team member, or a community.

Tree-Gifting connects people through a shared environmental act — strengthening your message and inspiring more reforestation.

A Tree-Gift consists of two essential components:

    1. The physical tree: A real tree planted in one of our global reforestation projects, contributing to carbon capture, biodiversity restoration, and community support.
    2. The digital tree: A digital representation of the planted tree, featuring details about its species, the planting location, the project background, and a personalized image and message from you.

The physical tree associated with your Tree-Gift will be planted whether the recipient simply views the gift or creates an account to add the virtual tree to their personal forest.

 

How does it work?

You plant a tree → We send a gift email → The recipient collects the tree in their own forest

There are 3 key moments in the Tree-Gift process:

  1. You plant a tree via our Plant & Offer feature.

  2. We send an email to the recipient (immediately or on a scheduled date).

  3. The recipient collects the tree into their own Tree-Nation forest by clicking the link.

Until the tree is collected, it’s still visible in your forest and linked to your profile. If the recipient never collects it, the tree remains yours.


Where does the tree appear?

When you give a Tree-Gift:

  • The tree appears in your Tree-Nation forest (always).

  • Once the recipient collects it, it also appears in their forest.

This shared visibility connects both people in a meaningful way — while the CO₂ offset is only counted once (see below).

Why the tree and CO₂ appear in two forests

Tree-Gifts are designed to create a ripple effect. The tree you planted becomes part of someone else’s climate journey too — without affecting the accuracy of CO₂ reporting.

Dual display, single impact

When a Tree-Gift is claimed:

  • The tree and its CO₂ value are visible in both forests (yours and the recipient’s).

  • This allows both parties to celebrate and communicate the impact.

  • However, the CO₂ is only officially attributed to the sponsor (you) and is only counted once in Tree-Nation’s global offset totals.

This avoids any risk of greenwashing or double-counting.

  • Share responsibility: Climate action should be collective — gifting trees reinforces this idea.

  • Net Zero Team: Companies offset employee emissions by gifting trees monthly. Employees see their trees and learn that their footprint is compensated.

 

Can I send Tree-Gifts in bulk?

Yes! Use our “Offer to a large group” feature to upload a list of recipients and plant in bulk.
You can even request a shared link or QR code to distribute trees at events, in emails, or on product packaging.

Where can I manage my Tree-Gifts?

Go to your My Contributions page to:

  • Track which trees were claimed

  • Download certificates

  • Resend gift emails if needed


Manual or automated gifting

Tree-Gifts can be offered on an ad-hoc (manual) basis—perfect for special one-time occasions—or integrated into your ongoing business activities. Through Tree-Nation’s services for companies, you can automate the gifting process, making it simple to send trees as part of your customer engagement strategy, employee recognition program, or marketing campaigns.
