When you plant trees with Tree-Nation, your contribution automatically includes its CO2 impact. There is no need to purchase separate carbon credits or add-on options. Every tree you fund already carries its corresponding CO2 capture, measured and assigned to you.

1. CO₂ impact is always included with Tree‑Nation trees

At Tree‑Nation, CO₂ absorption is built in by design.

Each species we plant has a scientifically calculated CO₂ value, and that value is attached to your trees from the start. This ensures that every planting action represents a real, traceable climate contribution, not just a symbolic gesture.

Some reforestation initiatives separate the tree from its CO₂ claim, but at Tree‑Nation, these two are inseparable. After all, what is a tree without its environmental benefit?

2. CO2 impact vs carbon credits: what's the difference?

Every Tree-Nation tree carries a CO2 impact: the measured tonnes of carbon its species is expected to sequester over its monitored lifetime.

Whether that CO2 impact can be reported as a carbon credit for climate reporting depends on the project's certification tier and the carbon rights framework it operates under:

• Foundation and Mission projects transfer carbon rights, meet the full documentation and MRV requirements of national and international frameworks, and issue carbon credits eligible for climate reporting under CSRD ESRS E1, CDP Climate Change, and SBTi Beyond Value Chain Mitigation.
• Nature, Forest Gardens, and Legacy projects deliver the same measured CO2 impact per tree, but operate in contexts where carbon rights or documentation requirements make credit issuance for climate reporting impractical or restricted (for example public land, smallholder aggregations, or projects predating current frameworks). These trees still capture real CO2, and that impact is documented, but it is not marketed as a carbon credit and is not eligible for climate offset reporting.

The CO2 measurement is the same across all tiers. What differs is the reporting label attached to the output.

3. We don’t double‑count or resell CO₂ impact

Each tonne of CO₂ linked to your trees is exclusively assigned to you, whether it is issued as a carbon credit (Foundation, Mission) or as documented CO2 impact (Nature, Forest Gardens, Legacy).

Once a tree is planted and linked to your forest, its CO₂ impact cannot be:

• sold again to another sponsor, or
• counted twice toward separate impact claims.

This means your contribution is unique, verifiable, and fully protected from both double‑charging and double‑counting, two of the most common integrity issues in the carbon world.

4. How we technically prevent duplication

Tree‑Nation’s platform was built to make duplication impossible.

• Each tree has its own Digital Tree ID recorded in our Tree Ledger – How Each Tree Is Digitally Unique.
• Since 2023, we have worked with dedicated planting sites for CO₂ allocation.
• Our database architecture ensures a strict rule: one tree → one sponsor → one CO₂ claim.
• Every tree, across every tier, is recorded in the public retirement log at the moment it is purchased.

Because of this digital traceability, your impact is transparent and permanently linked to you, visible in your forest and certificates.

5. How CO₂ attribution works

We differentiate between shared visibility and reportable CO₂ impact, depending on your relationship with the tree.

• 🏢 When your company plants trees, you receive the associated CO₂ value, even if you choose to gift those trees to customers, employees, or partners.
• 🎁 If you receive tree gifts from other users, the CO₂ linked to those gifted trees do not count as part of your company’s impact.
• 📊 This clear distinction helps avoid duplication or overstatement and aligns with international standards for carbon accounting.
• ✅ Only trees planted and paid for by your company are reflected in the Impact Statement.

This ownership principle ensures your report showcases your true reforestation and carbon impact, supporting trustworthy ESG, CSR, and sustainability communications.

Why do we show CO₂ on both sender and recipient pages?

For communication purposes, the CO₂ value of each tree is displayed on both the sender’s and recipient’s forest. This helps engage gift recipients and spread environmental awareness.

However, behind the scenes, and especially in official reporting, the CO₂ impact is only ever counted once.

6. Can I use this for my carbon accounting?

The CO2 values on your Tree-Nation certificate document the tonnes associated with your financed trees.

• Foundation and Mission credits are designed for use in climate reporting under CSRD ESRS E1, CDP Climate Change, and SBTi Beyond Value Chain Mitigation, and can be reported as carbon offsets.
• Nature, Forest Gardens, and Legacy CO2 impact is designed for climate contribution and for disclosure under biodiversity, community, and forestry frameworks (CSRD ESRS E4, S3, CDP Forests, VSME). It documents the real CO2 captured through your support but is not reported as a carbon offset against corporate emissions.

For example, Cofidis includes its annual Tree-Nation certificate to report the amount of CO2 compensated through its trees. This certificate serves as documented proof of the CO2 value associated with your financed trees, backed by Tree-Nation's carbon calculation methodology and traceability records.

7. When you may need external certification

Tree-Nation's own certifications (Foundation, Mission, Nature, Forest Gardens) cover most companies' CO2 impact and climate reporting needs. External certification is only needed in specific cases:

• A national regulatory scheme requires it (for example, France's Label Bas Carbone).
• Your reporting or auditor requires VCS, Gold Standard, or Plan Vivo credit format specifically.
• You need Article 6-eligible credits for international transfer or compliance-market use.
